Chapter 17: Rebirth
A1GP Collection, Inc. was established exclusively for the purposes of restoring the collection of A1GP Powered by Ferrari chassis. All 21 chassis that were originally raced in the series are now serviced in our 20,000 sq ft headquarters located in “Race City USA” (Mooresville, NC).
Each chassis is being meticulously disassembled, and mechanically refreshed to bring it back to peak operational condition. A1GP Collection has worked with a carefully selected list of original manufacturers and specialty partners to acquire all existing NOS spares and remanufacturing components from original CAD drawings where necessary.
The team is focused on finding the perfect combination of originality and useability.
The A1GP Powered by Ferrari chassis originally featured Magnetti Marelli engine management software. Notoriously complicated to work on in-period, and with better technology now available, the decision was made to convert to a bespoke Life Racing engine management system. Working with their engineers on dynos, track testing, and simulations for the past five years, we have now created a turn-key system that allows for better than original functionality, self-owned software licensing, and long-term useability ensured.
Each chassis gearbox has been been refreshed by Xtrac, the original manufacturer. All consumables are replaced, (gaskets, sleeves, etc), hardware inspected, ratios revised, and final pressure testing is handled just minutes up the road at their NC base of operations.
Safety is always a top priority in any motorsports application, and here no short cuts are taken. Sabelt has created revised safety belts and mounting hardware that meet modern FIA requirements. ATL was requestioned to remanufacture the original fuel bladders with small modifications to modernize as needed. Custom brake and hydraulic lines are made onsite. New brake rotors and pads have been remanufactured with newer compounds and carbon disc blends.
Ensuring the originality is maintained everywhere possible, all of the chassis are being brought back to life in their period-correct liveries. This exciting and unique moment in Ferrari’s history is now being assured to maintain its proper position alongside its iconic peers (like the 512BBLM, 333SP, F40LM) as the only open-wheel Ferrari ever to be built outside of Formula 1.
