The back story
Ferrari’s Participation in the A1GP Series begins.
A1GP was a single make open wheel series that ran from 2005 to 2009. It was unique in that competitors solely represented nations rather than individual teams. As such, it was promoted as the World Cup of Motorsports. In 2007, the series turned to Ferrari to assist in the design of their next generation car for the 2008 season.
Ferrari was contracted to create the complete technical chassis design and supply the power units. Pulling from Ferrari’s engineering expertise and decades of F1 Grand Prix experience, a unique blueprint was drafted tapping into all facets of their immense racing background.
The DNA of the A1GP Powered by Ferrari was derived from the 2004 Ferrari Formula One Championship-winning car, piloted by none other than Michael Schumacher. An elite lineage to say the least.
A pure-bred, normally aspirated Ferrari V8 engine provides the soul and soundtrack of the most iconic years of Ferrari’s history and is directly linked to the design of their six consecutive titles from 1999 to 2004.
The series came to an early end in 2009 amid a worldwide recession. Ultimately, 21 of these Powered by Ferrari A1GP cars were built and raced in period.
“Each setback presents an opportunity for growth, a chance to come back stronger than ever before”
– Michael Schumacher
Fast forward to the present, and the entire paddock of 21 cars are being completely restored and are now positioned to preserve their history and Ferrari’s supply of engines and design to the aspirational A1GP single-make series.
